Monoculars Reviews: Find the Perfect Monocular for Your Needs in 2023
Lawrence Avila Jun 8, 2023 11:44 PM
A monocular is a device which enables you to see distant objects. They are also known as field glasses, hunters' binoculars, or copers. They're generally used by hobbyists, hikers, campers, hunters, and bird watchers. However, they are increasingly being adopted by professional photographers, wildlife researchers, and even military units. In this blog post, I'll take a look at monoculars reviews, as well as some of the leading monocular brands available on the market today.
HOW WE PICKED & TESTED
- Sharpness: A good monocular should have a wide field of view, good contrast, and sharp resolution.
- Lightweight: We look for binoculars that are as light as possible without compromised image quality.
- Clarity: We place high value on binoculars that can capture in-focus images, even in bright sunlight.
- Parallax: We look for binoculars that are easy to use, with smooth focus, a zoom range, and a diopter adjustment that is easy to set.
- Optical blocks: We look for binoculars with a clear optical block, which helps the binoculars maintain a sharp image.
And the winners:
Best Overall Monocular:
Vortex Optics Crossfire HD 12x50 Binoculars
The Vortex Optics Crossfire HD Binoculars have many of the features we've come to expect from high-end tactical optics. The 12x magnification provides good close-up viewing capacity but tight focus. The quality glass, excellent coatings, and rugged construction make this a good choice for outdoor use. The Crossfire HDs also have a handful of practical features, such as center focus adjustment, a 50mm objective lens, and dual-rotation eyecups that twist up and down.
The binoculars are a bit on the heavy side, but construction is plastic, not metal, so a jacket pocket should be okay. The $399 price is more than a bit high, but Vortex optics is renowned for the quality of their optics.
Pros
- Great optics
- Top-notch ergonomics
- Solid construction
- Lightweight
- Waterproof
Cons
- No carrying case included
- Only 12x magnification
Best Value Monocular:
Vortex Optics Recce Pro HD 8x32 Monocular
The Vortex Optics Recce Pro HD was, by far, the most lightweight and compact monocular we tested, and it is easy to pocket or stow away. That makes the recce Pro ideal for use in a wide variety of environments. And although it uses 3X binoculars optics and won't produce the same resolution as a higher-power rifle scope, the recce Pro produced sharp, detailed photos. In addition, it is waterproof and fog-proof, so you can use it in almost any environment. The eyecup is large and folds down enough for glasses, and the textured rubber armor helps provide a solid grip.
The reticle focus wheel was smooth and focused quickly. This monocular is extremely rugged, but the sole battery charge lasted just over an hour in our tests. For longer missions or for combining with other optics, you might want to carry a spare battery or a larger battery charger.
Pros
- Excellent optics
- Fully waterproof
- Durable
- Inexpensive
Cons
- Expensive
- No tripod mounts
Best Saving Product:
Vortex Optics VMX-3T 3X Red Dot Sight Magnifier with Built-In
This magnifier/mount combo is great for shooting handguns and rifles and is an excellent upgrade for serious shooters, especially owners of red dot sights. The lever-style flip mount is easy to use, and the included lens cleaning fluid and tissue make it easy to keep clean. The 3.2x magnification and 38.2-foot field of view make it a good choice for long-range shooting, and the 1/3- or co-witness mount makes it simple to mount it to a rifle's rail. The parallax adjustment knob makes it easy to focus the optic without removing the magnifier.
Outside its Magnifier/Mount Combo, the Vortex VMX-3T Red Dot Sight is one of the best red dot sights we've ever tested. It takes just a few seconds to sight-in using the included screws, and it has an adjustable 12- to 40-minute click-stop windage/elevation turret. That lets shooters dial in their sights quickly and easily, and they can do so using just one hand. The VMX-3T also provides a generous eye relief of 2.2 inches, ideal for most shooters. We like the VMX-3T so much that it's our top pick for red dot sights.
Pros
- Built in flip mount
- Lightweight
- Easy to use
- 3x magnification
- Truly waterproof
- Runs on AA batteries
Cons
- Lens view is narrow
- No warranty
