Top 10 Best Telescope For Personal Use of 2023
Rafael Alvarado May 30, 2023 8:41 AM
When most people think of telescopes, they think of professional astronomers peering into the cosmos. However, a telescope can be a useful tool for anyone. Today, we'll take a look at some of the best telescopes for personal use. In this blog post, we will explore the differences between different types of telescopes so that you can choose the one that's best for your needs.
HOW WE PICKED & TESTED
- Ease of use: We test telescopes on a clear evening, and we set up and align them according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Quality: We test telescopes’ optics with The Sky Watcher’s 65mm refractor and 2-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain scopes and with Sky Quality Meter software.
- Ease of storage: We look for telescopes that collapse into a compact bundle that can be stored on a shelf or in a closet.
- Price: We selected models in the sweet spot between value and quality.
And the winners:
Best Overall Telescope:Orion 09007 SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector Telescope (Black)
The Orion 09007 SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector Telescope is everything a beginning or intermediate astronomer could ask for in a first scope. Its solid design provides the sturdiness that beginners will need, and its equatorial mount offers a better stability than a simple alt-az mount. The only thing this telescope is missing is a built-in finderscope, but for those who like to learn the basics in a visual experience, viewing celestial objects through a finderscope is just not the same.
The 5.1-inch aperture gathers an ample amount of light, making it ideal for beautiful planetary views, and for brighter galaxies and star clusters. The optical tube design is also compact for easy transport and auto collimation, so setting up this scope takes no time at all. The mount is also adjustable for correct tracking of celestial objects as they move across the night sky.
Pros
- Sturdy mount, nice optics, and very good value for the cost
- Quick, responsive focus
- Great beginner scope
- Overall nice package
Cons
- No finder scope
- The tripod mount can be a little frustrating at times
Best Value Telescope:Celestron – StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ Smartphone App-Enabled Telescope –
The StarSense Explorer is a user-friendly smartphone accessory that acts like a powerful telescope, its impressive imaging capabilities comparable to a 127mm refractor. The Explorer holds up well and is built to last, with sturdy aluminum construction and plenty of accessories included. With its 102mm optical tube, it projects a large image (as large as most 127mm refractors), but it's compact and light enough that it's easy to carry. It's easy to set up, and its smartphone app guides you step by step through star-spotting, calculating your location and finding nearby objects. It has many advantages over older, less user-friendly smartphone planetarium apps, including the ability to quickly identify nearby objects, and it uses your phone's GPS to calculate its location accurately. It's also compatible with all the major smartphone operating systems: Android, iOS, and Windows 10 Mobile.
While StarSense may not have the impressive imaging capabilities of dedicated astronomical apps, it will satisfy your curiosity, and it's a great way to introduce friends, family, and children to the night sky. It's also a great beginner telescope for learning the basics of star-spotting.
Pros
- Great app for those new to astronomy, with lots of tutorials and guided experiences
- Very easy to set-up
- Comes with a wide range of eyepieces and finderscope
- Good build quality
- Great range of accessories
Cons
- The tripod is comically flimsy
- The tripod legs don't fold back when collapsed, so there's significant bulk when transporting
Best Saving Product:Gskyer Telescope, Telescopes for Adults, 600x90mm AZ Astronomical Refractor Telescope,Telescope
The quality is quite good, but the practice is not. The first thing we noticed when we received our Gskyer AZ90600 is the telescope's weight: 4.7 pounds. The scope itself is also large at 6.3 pounds and, at 20.6 inches, the tripod is longer than most telescopes.
Pros
- Very easy to focus
- Good quality for the price
- Good magnification
- The tripod is pretty decent
- The lens is coated, so it should be pretty clear
- The tripod is adjustable, so it should become quite reliable
- The packaging is decent, as you get a nice case and cleaning supplies
Cons
- The tripod is heavy, and that can make it a bit difficult to use
- The setup process is quite complicated
