The best telescope for enthusiast is one of the essential tools for astrophotography. In astronomy, it is the tool that connects the physical world with the images in the sky. Today, the telescope is a special instrument that is used for a wide range of purposes, from looking at the moon, planets and stars to observing distant galaxies and nebulae. There are many brands of telescopes, depending on the purpose and design of the instrument, but some of these are particularly popular.

HOW WE PICK & TEXT

  1. Magnification: We look for models with low magnification, which makes it easier to view objects in daylight.
  2. Ease of use: We look for Telescopes that are easy to set up, easy to use, and have reliable controls.
  3. Ergonomics: Telescopes with the highest magnification usually require the viewer to tilt their head back, which might be uncomfortable for some.
  4. Portability: We look for telescopes that are easy to transport, whether by car or plane.

And the winners:

Best Overall Telescope: Celestron - NexStar 130SLT Computerized Telescope - Compact and Portable

This computerized telescope is the best telescope that we found for adults and kids to share at around $1000. While most telescopes of this price range don't offer dual eyepieces, the Nexstar 130SLT does, making it a great choice for families. I like that the NexStar SLT is compact enough to take to a camping or dark sky site, yet robust enough to deliver impressive views.
The SkyAlign procedure is also convenient, and the included software's interface is easy to understand and use. This NexStar 130SLT's large aperture (130mm compared to 100mm in the 130ST) results in brighter images of distant objects, so the NexStar 130SLT is the best telescope for stargazing.
Pros
  • Very lightweight and portable
  • Easy to set up and take apart
  • A solid, well-made product
  • Got all the bells and whistles you'd expect
  • The GPS feature is a nice touch
  • Silicon eyepiece covers are a nice touch

Cons

  • The GPS feature is fairly basic, lacking features like topography
  • Lacks any form of alt-azimuth mount, instead opting for a "traditional" alt-azimuth mount design

Best Value Telescope: Celestron – StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ Smartphone App-Enabled Telescope –

Celestron's StarSense smartphone-enabled telescope is an ambitious device that offers some impressive capabilities, even though its features haven't all been polished yet. The optical tube is sturdy, and the mount is easy to adjust once you get the hang of it. But using the app and telescope together is a work in progress. The mount and optical tube are awkward to adjust manually, and the app can sometimes struggle to pinpoint exactly where the telescope is pointing. The mount also has some issues with alignment, and it's loud, even with the earmuffs on. The 102mm aperture lens has decent performance and a crisp, bright image, and we tried the telescope with a variety of apps to test how well it worked.
If you just have the app on your phone, you can use it in a dark room, but it doesn't work as well in brighter conditions, like when you're out on a patio. Our other main complaints: It's pricey. There are cheaper telescopes with similar capabilities. Given the issues we encountered, we wouldn't recommend purchasing this right now.
Pros
  • Works well with IOS devices
  • Good construction
  • Includes everything you'd want in a telescope
  • Does what you would expect a telescope to do

Cons

  • Not ideal for astrophotography
  • Difficult to get the app to recognize stars
