Lost: A Theory on Time Travel

Supporting Evidence

1. It’s been confirmed that the “ghosts” such as Jack’s father, Dave (Hurley’s imaginary friend), Walt and Kate’s horse are very real.  Remember when Hurley picked up Dave’s physical slipper after the short chase?  Unless these people are just simply “ghosts,” then there has to be a manipulation of time in order to justify their physical presence.

2. The producers said that the show will contain the same level of “sci-fi” elements as a Michael Crichton book.  Note that he wrote a book called “Timeline” where people traveled back to the past via time machine.  The time machine broke down a person into particles and accelerated the particles to a point where they could pass through a wormhole to the past.  I’d say that “Timeline’s” level of “stretching science” is the equivalent to support this theory of time travel in LOST. Furthermore, Cuse and Lindelof also said made a side comment in an interview that the island could exist in “any time.”

3. People (Besides Desmond) don’t actually start arriving at the island until AFTER the hatch implosion – suggesting that when the fail safe was turned, something happened to open the island up to the outside world.   Desmond had the special boat, which brought him to the island.  The boat was likely programmed with the coordinates of the portal between island time and real world time – allowing passage for only him to the island.

4. Ben knows what’s going to happen in the future!  Take the first episode of season 3.  During then book club meeting, Juliet makes a point that Ben is a strong believer in fate.  Ben is also portrayed as the ringleader and manipulator of many people.  Why would he manipulate if he wasn’t trying to “shape” some type of events that are meant to take place in the future?

5. The fact that the producers introduced the idea of “constants” is PROOF that they can manipulate the concept of “time travel” to any degree that they want.  Let me ask: has any other movie or show portrayed “constants?”  Does this concept of “constants” conform to any type of time travel as we know it?  NO!  And that’s why the producers can apply concepts like aging wombs, and the ability to heal rapidly.  The only fundamental concept of time travel that applies to the show is that you can’t change the future – and fate will do ANYTHING to course correct.
